Hericium erinaceus also known as Lion's mane or Comb tooth must take the prize for most beautiful fungi of the boreal forest. It is white branched, and covered with an array of little teeth that look like ocean coral or spongy icicles.
It has incredible potential as a neuroprotective therapeutic agent for neurological conditions. Although still in its its infancy, accumulated evidence suggested that this culinary-medicinal mushrooms may play an important role in the prevention of many age-associated neurological dysfunctions, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.[1] Therefore, efforts have been devoted to a search for more mushroom species that may improve memory and cognition functions. Lion’s mane contains a rich myco-nutrient composition, most interestingly a compound called erinacine, which has the ability to induce synthesis of nerve growth factor (NFG) which is required by the brain for developing and maintaining important sensory neurons.  The recommended dose of H. erinaceus dried fruiting body for increasing NGF production is 3–5 g per day.2
